Brief History of Mt. Pulaski _ page 2
Mt. Pulaski is located just 22 miles NE of Springfield
and between Lincoln and Decatur at the intersection of routes 54 and 121, with a
population of 1800. Our town was founded in 1836 and named after Count
Casmir Pulaski, a Brigadier General in the Revolutionary War. He helped
General George
Washington and his troops with the science of artillery. There are several
towns and cities throughout the United States named Pulaski, but our town is the
only one named Mt. Pulaski. This is due to the fact that most of our town
is located on a hill, with the highest point having the courthouse, which
overlooks the rest of the town and countryside.
The town is home to one of the two remaining original
courthouses in which Abraham Lincoln practiced law as he rode the Eighth
Judicial Circuit. The Courthouse is
located in the middle of the town square and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The
Mt. Pulaski Historical Museum, on the north side of the square, is also open for
tours. Of course, we are extremely
proud of our Abraham Lincoln heritage!
Today, Mt. Pulaski is a spirited little farm town and residential community. It has a public school system (K – 12) as well as an elementary Lutheran school. Cafes and restaurants, five churches, insurance agencies, a hardware and nursery store, a grocery store, a pharmacy, doctor and dentist offices, auto repair and supply shops, craft and antique shops, furniture and carpet stores, hair and beauty salons, a farm equipment repair and supply center, bi-weekly newspaper, a florist, a senior and teen community center and a cob mill make up its business community. Of course, there are banks, fire and police stations, a post office, cemeteries, and several taverns. We are also proud of our excellent Vonderlieth Living Center and Nursing Home. There are several park and recreation facilities. Many local clubs and organizations are available – Rotary, Lions, Looking for Lincoln, Historical Society, American Legion, VFW, Jaycees and others.
Mt. Pulaski is home of the annual Memorial Day Celebration in May, “Blue Grass” Festival on Father’s Day weekend in June, 4th of July Celebration and Soap Box Derby, Fall Festival with its Soap Box Derby and parade in early September, and the “Christmas on Vinegar Hill” celebration on the weekend before Thanksgiving. These celebrations attract hundreds and even thousands from our out-lying areas. Meals on wheels, Habitat for Humanity, and the Summer Community Band add to the flavor of our community.
