Annual St. Patrick's Chicken Dinner The annual St. Patrick's Fried Chicken Dinner will be held on Sunday, August 22, 2004. Many volunteers have signed up, but some are still needed. There is a sign-up sheet in the back of the church, and those places where volunteers are still needed are highlighted in orange. We particularly need volunteers for the serving line. Last year, we served 650 dinners, and if we serve as many or more this year, we need to ensure that the line does not have long delays. If you are planning on driving a tractor at the State Fair, please try to choose a day other than the 22nd (which is the last day of the fair). Regular bulletin updates will appear as the day of the dinner draws near. Thank you for your willingness to help. |

Congratulations Zachary Moore was chosen as a recipient of the "Taking Care of Business" servant award at the Catholic Heart Work Camp held recently in New Orleans. This award was designed to honor youth who stand out with regard to service and living one's faith. He was nominated for this award by Nancy Davis, St. Thomas/St. Patrick's Youth Group Teacher. Only 3 such awards out of 350 youths in attendance at the Catholic Heart Work Camp were given during the week. Please give Zach your personal congratulations. |

St. Patrick TV special Patrick, a television special on the real St. Patrick will be aired on the Hallmark Channel on Sunday, March 14th, at 9 pm (central time). The program was produced by Faith & Values Media. Patrick is part adventure tale and part spiritual awakening, with the future saint rising from slave to liberator, learning to forgive and ultimately love his enemies, taking up a cause no one believed in, and finally lighting a fire that kept western civilization alive. The show is narrated by Liam Neeson, and features Gabriel Byrne as the voice of Patrick. On-air-commentary is provided by Frank McCourt, author of Angela's Ashes. Patrick was produced and directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Pamela Mason Wagner. Edmund F. Gordon, Director of Religious Education in the diocese of Wilmington, Delaware, has developed an educational discussion guide for Patrick. the guide, along with photos, interviews, music, and more may be accessed at www.patricktv.tv |

| Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ We have reserved a theater for a showing of Mel Gibson's new movie, The Passion of the Christ. The movie is opening on Ash Wednesday, Feb 25th, 2004. We have reserved the theater for Saturday morning, March 6, 2004. The movie will begin at 10:30 am, and runs two hours and five minutes, and the cost is $5.75 per person. Those wishing to attend can pay after Sunday Mass at the back of the church. Tickets will be issued when you pay. These are not actual tickets, but simply a device to allow us to keep track of how many people are coming. Checks can be made payable to St. Patrick's Church, since the overall check for the theater will be issued from the St. Patrick's treasury. | |||||||||
| A cautionary note on "the passion of the christ" The movie will be "R" rated. The rating is for intensity and violence, particularly in the graphic depiction of the crucifixion. I've tried to obtain information to help people determine if the movie would be suitable for their younger children. This is difficult to do, because, although there have been private showings, much about the movie is still under wraps. However, Mel Gibson himself has said that he wouldn't recommend the movie for children under 12 because it is so intense. So, I offer this as a guideline. If I am able to learn more, I will pass the information on. | |||||||||

Congratulations! This year's homecoming queen at Mt. Pulaski High School is Susan Cochran, a member of our youth group. In addition, the two other candidates for queen, Chelsea Faith and Stephanie Jason, are also members of our youth group. And, the Junior Class Attendants, Mallory Davis and Zach Moore, are members of the youth group, too. Congratulations to those students, whose accomplishments reflect well not only on the youth group, but also on their families, their parish, and their communities. |
