MOUNT
PULASKI -- John R. Holmes Sr., 77, of Mount
Pulaski died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007, at 6:37 a.m.
at Vonderlieth Living Center.
His funeral will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at
Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Mount
Pulaski, with Bill Shanle officiating.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. at the
funeral home. |

Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery
at a later date.
Mr. Holmes was owner and operator of Holmes
Garage in Mount Pulaski as a mechanic.
He was a member of the Phoenix Fire
Department from 1956 to 1993 and served as
chief. He started the Mount Pulaski Ambulance
Service in 1973 and was the first EMT.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the
Korean War and served in the Illinois Air
National Guard.
He was born Jan. 9, 1930, in rural Chestnut
to Earl E. and Helen G. Kinder Holmes. He
married Luetta Ruth Uppole in Chestnut on July
5, 1953. She preceded him in death Dec. 27,
2006.
He is survived by four sons, John R. (and
Laurie) Holmes Jr. of Lawton, Okla., Gregory L.
(and Tammy) Holmes of Mount Pulaski, Michael E.
Holmes of Homewood and Darren (and Tammy) Holmes
of Billings, Mont.; two sisters, Norma (and
Stan) Snyder of Chestnut and Mable (and Wayne)
Wilham of Mount Pulaski; eight grandchildren;
and nine great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents
and two brothers.
He was a member of the Chestnut United
Methodist Church, was a Boy Scout leader for
many years and was vice president of Heritage In
Flight at the Logan County Airport. He was a Mount Pulaski alderman from 1999 to
2007. He was a Courier Man of the Month.
