A Mount Pulaski woman died after a drunken
driver's vehicle struck the motorcycle she
was riding at Keokuk and Ottawa streets
shortly after 9:32 p.m. Wednesday.
The driver fled the scene, but later
returned and was taken into custody.
Colleen McKinney, 44, was pronounced dead
at 9:55 p.m. after Logan County Paramedics
rushed her to the Abraham Lincoln Memorial
Hospital emergency room, Logan County
Coroner Bob Thomas said today.
Her husband and driver of the motorcycle,
Thomas "Scott" McKinney, 49, was
taken by ambulance to Memorial Medical
Center in Springfield where he was
undergoing surgery this morning, a hospital
spokeswoman said.
Thomas McKinney suffered injuries to a
hip, according to Thomas. Lincoln police
detective Sgt. Tom Rowland said initial
reports suggested McKinney may have been
experiencing some paralysis.
Because surgery was in progress this
morning, hospital officials were unsure of
his current condition or his prognosis, the
spokeswoman said.
Police said the McKinneys were not
wearing helmets at the time of the crash.
Rowland said they were westbound on a
2005 Harley Davidson Electra Glide Classic
when a 2001 Ford Escape driven by
21-year-old Lincoln resident Matthew L.
Armstrong struck them.
Armstrong, of the 500 block of Third
Street, allegedly fled the scene but was
arrested on charges of reckless homicide,
leaving the scene of an accident and drunken
driving when he returned to the scene about
9:45 p.m., Rowland said.
Lincoln police, who were assisted by
Illinois State Police accident
reconstructionist Dan DeRenzy, closed off a
two-block section of Keokuk between College
Avenue and Kankakee Street for several hours
until investigators finished collecting
details necessary to reconstruct the
accident.
DeRenzy said initial evidence suggests
the point of impact between the motorcycle
and the sport utility vehicle occurred in
the outside westbound lane of Keokuk and the
northbound lane of Ottawa.
Rowland said police detained Armstrong at
the scene after he returned to the site with
an unidentified female passenger. Armstrong
was taken to Abraham Lincoln Memorial
Hospital were physicians administered a
blood test that indicated Armstrong's blood
alcohol content was over the legal limit, he
said.
In a fatal accident, Rowland said,
investigators have the authority to require
blood tests of drivers.
Thomas said forensic pathologist Dr.
Jessica Bowman of Springfield performed an
autopsy at Memorial Medical at 8 a.m. today,
but preliminary results were not available
and Thomas would not speculate about the
possible cause of death.
He said a coroner's inquest will be
scheduled in about six weeks after the
necessary police and medical reports are
completed.
Armstrong, who faces felony charges of
reckless driving and leaving the scene of an
accident, is being held in lieu of bond.
